Club Med - Agreement on minimum social standards
On 23 July 2009, the central management of the French company Club Méditerranée and the relevant international and European trade union federations, IUF and EFFAT, signed a renewed agreement on the respect of minimum social standards. The secretary of the European Works Council was involved in the negotiations. The agreement concluded initially in 2004 for Europe and Africa now applies to all 80 holiday clubs worldwide in 30 countries. The monitoring is carried out through a joint committee. The agreement already brought concrete improvements for Italian holiday clubs, where trade union rights had been violated.
The second part of the agreement secures the working conditions of seasonal workers in Europe and Africa, which may not be lower than those of employees on site. This applies particularly to workers from Turkey, as well as from Morocco and Tunisia, who temporarily work within the EU. But it also relates to holiday clubs around the Mediterranean, in Senegal, the Ivory Coast and Mauritius. These will in future be visited for three days per season by union representatives to inspect the working conditions on the site.
