Good prospects for the rights of workers in the French presidency in the second half of 2008
In the Committee for Employment and Social Affairs of the European Parliament, the French Minister of Social Affairs Bertrand presented the socio-political programme of the French Presidency. He stressed the importance of the social dimension under the French Presidency. France is pursuing a collective approach involving all stakeholders. The agreements reached in the Council of Ministers on the Directives on Temporary Agency Work and on Working Time he deemed a success. It is the clear intention of the Presidency to conclude both legislative procedures until December.
At the same time, Bertrand also implied that the position of the
European Parliament, which is much closer to the trade union position
than the agreement of the Council, should be widely considered. France
also wants to continue negotiations on the directive on the portability
of occupational pensions. According the will of the Presidency, quick
progress should be made also with regard to the European Works Council
Directive; agreement should be reached by December as well. Bertrand
pronounced clearly for a comprehensive strengthening of information and
consultation obligations.
